The Indian War of 1864 chronicles one of the bloodiest conflicts between the European settlers and military forces of the United States, and the Native American tribes.
A shocking account of the bloodshed and damage wrought as white settlers moved relentlessly westward during the 19th century, this book lays bare the scale of the conflicts with the Native Americans. Furthermore it is authentic a first-hand, somewhat biographical recollection of the conflict penned by a young American cavalryman posted to the Western frontier with the mission of securing it for settlers.
The conflicts took place simultaneously with the American Civil War, and it was thus that rumors of the Confederacy joining with the Native American tribes in hindering the expansion of the United States are present. Despite its title, this book is not entirely about the skirmishes fought descriptions of the land, the fledgling frontier society of the 'Wild West' era, and members of the native tribes are likewise included.
Eugene Ware was already well into maturity when he adapted these recollections from a diary he jotted notes. Later in life, he would enjoy prominence as a local Kansas tradesman and politician. He was also a poet whose verse was well-received and quite acclaimed in his locality.
This edition of The Indian War of 1864 contains every illustration appended in Eugene Ware's original book; mainly these are sketches of ridges, hills and pathways which Ware felt benefited from visual representation. Also included are the three appendices, which recount separate stories relevant to the events of 1864.

Unlike some of my other random forays into Amazon's $.99 digital offerings, this one turned out to be a true jewel! Fascinating descriptions, anecdotes and recollections from a young cavalry officer who helped to secure the American frontier during the country's westward expansion. Engaging writing makes this an easy read. (Interestingly, Ware would later achieved some prominence in Kansas business and politics, and apparently is still highly regarded for his poetry, of all things.)Product details

The Indian War of 1864 Being a Fragment of the Early History of Kansas Nebraska Colorado and Wyoming Eugene Ware 9781545478677 Books Reviews
Best book of its type I have read.
One of the best first person accounts of early Indian Wars I have ever read. A must for the Old West student.
if you love history this is a good book to have
My only complaint is that the author often feels compelled, presumably for historical record, to list details of military units and of points along routes of travel that are impossible to follow without a much better map than is provided in the book (the book would be greatly improved if it had some decent maps). However these areas of excessive detail are easily skipped over.
